A Thought That Struck Me One Day

Just thought I’d share a couple text messages I sent to my friend Kaitlyn back in early June. We were texting past midnight, and everyone knows conversations start getting deep when that happens😂

“Off topic: A day or two ago I was struck with the thought that almost every single person in this world is as wrapped up in themselves as I am. Every person faces their own battles and has their own faults and shortcomings. Then I thought, you know, I really think I’m something, don’t I. I think of myself as if I’m the most important person in the world. I think of myself more than any other human being. Because I am me. But it truly is mind boggling when you think that everyone else feels the same way about themselves.

“And then that’s when it hits you at how BIG God really is. There’s 6 or 7 billion people out there like ME and God has the capability of spending time and caring for all of us INDIVIDUALLY.”

At first I thought I’d rephrase them, but then thought I’d just leave it the way I first wrote it. But really, just think about it. That old homeless man holding that sign, that lady walking her dog, those teenaged kids you met back in the woods… Every single individual is fearfully and wonderfully made! They each have a life as complex as yours and mine. The ups the downs, they feel those things too! Sometimes it’s hard to pull yourself away from your own problems enough to notice that other people face things too.

And then… the crazy part. The part that we will never ever begin to understand: God knows each and every person, and He has the time and the resources and the grace for everyone out there! While we’re down here trying to grasp the concept that God cares for us, for me, and all my “complicated” problems, He’s got the whole world in His hands (as the song says). With a God like that, we don’t have to worry!

Let me finish with a verse from the Bible:

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.” Isaiah 40:28 NKJV
